Diego Costa was actually born in Lagarto, Brazil but he plays for the Spanish national team. The controversial choice had made the football world in an uproar. Through the site of Goal.com, Costa gave a statement regarding his decision,
“It’s very difficult to choose between the country you were born in and the country that has given you everything,”
“I saw everything and I thought that the best choice was to play for Spain because I have done everything here,”
“This is not something against Brazil. I have a family in Brazil and that is where I was born. I hope God will allow me to stay there again someday,”
The decision received a negative response from Brazilians. Many people considered him a traitor.
Costa was born and grew up in Brazil. He grew up in Lagarto, a remote city in the Sergipe section. At the age of 9, Costa expressed his hobby in playing football at the Lagarto academy. He was then put to a higher level because he was considered too strong for his age.
Long before he got to know about football, Costa had a bad experience that almost made his life gone.
At that time, Costa, who was only six months old, was left by his mother to do the dishes. Little Costa fell asleep on a mattress in his bedroom. When his mother returned to Costa’s bed, she saw a poisonous snake approaching her child.
His mother had thought that it was a piece of tape, but the object she considered as a tape was moving. Only then did she realize that the object was a snake that would attack Costa.
With a quick movement, his mother pulled Costa’s hand to avoid her son from the bite of a poisonous snake. She claimed to be very trembling after saving his son’s life from the dangerous snake.
“I went to do the dishes and left Costa on the bed. When I returned, I saw a snake was about to attack my child. I immediately rushed to pull both of his hands and keep him away from the poisonous snake,”
“I trembled from my head to toe and feared something bad that might happen.”
Continuing his football career at Lagarto, Costa grew to be a harsh player and did not want to lose. In one match, he even refused to be replaced because he wanted to take revenge on a player who intentionally injured his leg.
The condition of the family, the environment, and the opponents that Costa had faced when he was young seemed to influence his character so far. He continued to play with a harsh style and a high fighting ability. He would do whatever it takes to win the match. If there was something that was considered a barrier, he did not hesitate to get rid of it.
Starting his career at Braga, Costa successfully became a reliable striker by creating a few goals at the big game. Until finally, he moved to Atletico Madrid and became worldwide known. Costa successfully handed on the golden stick of the powerful attackers which belongs to the Madrid city.
Although successfully transformed into one of the best goal scorers, Costa’s habits remained firmly attached. He often involved in a conflict with opposing players.
